Reefsteamers Regular Train operation details

The return journey is the highlight of the day for the passengers, as the climb from Magaliesburg to Krugersdorp is really challanging for the locomotive with all the steep gradients and sharp curves encountered. The locomotives have to work really hard on this section, with the most enjoyable sounds (for the enthusiast) coming from the locomotive. It is said that there is only one man made machine that can express it's emotions, and that's a steam locomotive. Sit back, relax and listen and you'll hear it talking to you

The cost of the Magaliesburg Train tickets for:
Adults = R200, Children (4-12) = R140 and the little 'uns who can sit on their parents' laps travel free (Children under 4 yrs.).
This is for a seat on a day sitter coach.  (Laid out in 2 x 3 seats in pairs facing each other.)

To book a private Coupe (Seats 3 adults) costs R800.00. There are only 3 Cpoupes available.
To book a private Compartment (Seats 6 Adults) costs R1500.00. There are only 5 Compartments available.
Private seating is limited and is available on a first-PAID first-served basis.

Thos fees doe not include refreshments, although the train includes a bar car and a "rolling trolley bar" for refreshments, sweets, crisps and cool drinks are available.

The Reefsteamers Association has a dedicated booking office:
Tel: 011 025 4363, Fax: 086 502 7780,  E- mail =

Passengers are responsible to make their own bookings for meals as well as the payments thereof.
See the section below for the destination options.

Option 1:
Travel to the beautiful Magaliesburg countryside on a classic old steam train, enjoy a leisurely lunch, explore the village with its arts and crafts shops, and come back to the big city behind steam (Much to the surprise and the envy of the commuters we usually pass!). The train usually leaves Johannesburg Station at 9:00am from Platform 14 and arrives at Magaliesburg Village at about 10:55.

At Magaliesburg you have the choise to stay at the Magaliesburg Country Hotel: spoil yourself and enjoy a scrumptious lunch in the Hotel garden, or you explore the Magaliesburg village. For our train trips the Hotel prepares a special “eat as much as you like” lunch at R80.00pp and children under 12yrs of age pay half price, no charge for the little one's under 3yrs.
Please note that you have to book your scrumptious Lunch in advance, directly be the Magaliesburg Country Hotel:

Passengers can also enjoy alternative meals at our Wimpy on the premises or our Chicken Licken just up the road from the Hotel.
We usually leave Magaliesburg at 15:40

Option 2:
Travel to the beautiful Magaliesburg countryside picnic area at Swallow's Inn. The train usually leaves Johannesburg Station at 9:00am from Platform 14. Please remain seated when we stop at Magaliesburg Country Hotel; after all passengers who have chosen Option 1 have dismarked, our train will continue with it's run to the picnic are at Swallow's Inn. We will arrive at Swallow's Inn at about 11:15. Braai fires are provided at the venue.Boerewors rolls may also be purchased at the venue. entrance feefor the picnic site is R20.00 per head, payable at the entrance gate to the venue. Departure from Swallow's Inn is at 14:45

We return home at Johannesburg Station about 17:45.
The times shown for the trips are our scheduled times, which we try to meet on a best effort basis.  Our well maintained coaches and locomotives rarely give trouble or cause breakdowns out on the open rails.  However, we may be delayed on the Transnet lines depending on their traffic movements and the signaling thereof.

The Reefsteamers Train usually runs with the following consist
1).  Six 'Day-Sitter' coaches.  These are laid out like a road going bus with 2 + 3 bench seating and full length baggage shelves.
2).  A single sleeper coach with 2 x 3 seater coupes and 6 x 6 seat compartments.  These must be individually booked.
3).  A licensed bar coach (spirits, wine and beer) with very comfy sofa type seats.

Most of the coaches have two flush toilets at one end.

My kids and I had a horrible experience whith the train service to Magalies on Sat 18Dec, I am completely unhappy and will discourage anyone who knows me.Our lives where endangered after the train got stuck in langlaagte station and NO one told us anything. We got stuck for hours at night until we made alternative plan at an extra cost.
